Family Self-Sufficiency Program FAQs

Who can join FSS?

You must be a participant in the MRHA7 Housing Choice Voucher Program or Low Rent Program to be eligible for FSS. The program is open to all members of the household who are at least 18 years of age.

The only requirement is a desire to become self-sufficient and a willingness to take the necessary steps to do so.

Do I have to give up my voucher when I graduate from FSS?

When the FSS contract is successfully completed, the member receives all the money in the savings account plus any interest.

What makes FSS different?

Choice. You are free to choose your own goals based on you vision of life for you and your family. How well and how quickly you succeed depends on you and your willingness to work with FSS.

Personal Attention. An FSS Coordinator and employment specialist will work tirelessly on your behalf—helping you to reach your goals one step at a time and encouraging you to reach the next level of self-sufficiency. Your FSS Coordinator is an advocate, mentor, and a friend.

Respect. Whatever you CAN conceive, you CAN achieve. FSS staff members will always respect your ideas, choices, and lifestyle.

Supportive Services

The services you receive will be based on your goals and your plan for action. For example, an FSS member who selects “obtain a career in nursing” as a goal might receive skills testing to determine his or her academic level, referral to a college or university with an accredited nursing program, and assistance in locating day care services so that the member, if a parent, can attend school.

Some of our supportive services are provided directly by FSS while some are provided through referrals to outside organizations. When possible, FSS refers members to services near their home, job, or school. Some of the supportive services we offer are:

Homeownership Program

Are you currently renting a unit through our Housing Choice Voucher Program? If you are, then you may be able to use your voucher to get assistance with purchasing your own home.

Qualified Voucher Holders may be able to use their housing assistance toward their own mortgage. The program is ideal for families and individuals who have always dreamed of owning their own home. That dream can now be your reality…it’s up to you!

By working with your FSS Coordinator, home buyers education providers, your mortgage lender, and your own REALTOR®, we have made it possible for families to move from renting to buying.

Once you have obtained a pre-qualification letter from your lender, you should provide a copy of this letter to your FSS Coordinator, who will pass this information onto the Homeownership Counselor who will walk you through the home buying process and will be available to answer any questions that you may have regarding this important step. You will be advised by the Homeownership Counselor to attend an 8-hours Home Buyers Education course as a requirement by HUD.
